Polyball Game

August 2008

By: W. B.

Split your squad into two teams. Each team gets to play defense and bat for as many innings as you (the coach) decide. Bases are set up approximately 30 feet apart, in a diamond layout.

Offense:

Each offensive player gets one opportunity per offensive time at bat. Everything is playable as long as the ball is hit with the bat—and only a swing and a miss is an out.

Defense:

The defensive team has two players working together at the same time. Each one starts behind a corner base (first and third).

After the hitter hits the ball, both defensive players must touch the ball with their hands, to stop the runner. (No passing the ball on defense.)

Points:

Points are scored by how many bases the runner touches before both defensive players touch the ball. (Runners may circle bases as many times as possible.)

Need for Playing:

  1. The game can be played anywhere: preferably in a gym or on a fenced field.
  2. A plastic bat and a polyball

This game teaches hand-eye coordination, teamwork, base running and situational skills. Plus, the players love to play it at the end of practice.

For an incentive which all players like, have the winning team decide what the losing team has to do—i.e., pack up equipment etc.
