Underhand Toss Drill

March 2005

Contributed By: Jay H. Clark

Equipment: Balls and Gloves

Purpose:
To teach proper technique of underhand toss on balls fielded to close to the bag to make an overhand throw.

Drill:
Position the players into three groups of 3 or 4 players at each base. Have one player kneel down on the infield and roll the ball to the player positioned about 8 to 10 feet off the base. The fielding player must charge the ball - then make a good underhand toss to the player covering the base.

The fielding player should run toward the base as he makes the underhand toss and allow his momentum to carry him past the bag while receiving player covers the base. After all players have mastered the toss, they should line up at short and have one coach cover the base and another coach roll the balls. Make the drill fast pace and as each player fails to field the ball or fails to toss the ball they will be counted out. Last player standing is the "Close Toss King."

This drill works on so many aspects fielding, footwork, charging the ball, and making a good soft toss.
