Fence Drill

Needed: Pitching Machine, Extension Cord, Bucket of Balls

Step 1

Set up your machine around the back of the infield pointing to the outfield fence.

Step 2

Adjust the machine so that you are throwing backspin flyballs, right to the fence area. For example on two wheel JUGS machines have the bottom wheel going faster than the top, and on a one wheel machine have the chute at the top of the tire. So that you aren't putting the ball in the same spot every time, you can adjust the machine by moving the dial on the control a digit or two, and by moving the machine laterally on its base.

Step 3

Have your outfielders play a little deeper than normal depth and react to the ball when it is fed into the machine. Their goal is to get back to the fence and then find the ball and make the play. This is an effective drill in helping your players to determine how many steps it is for them, from the start of the warning track to the fence.

Note-You can really make this a fun drill for the players by awarding a player the "Play of the Day" or reward the player who takes away the most home runs.
